Guest Facilities

Karioi Lodge sleeps up to 75 people and is set on a 110 acres nature reserve in whale bay. We have cozy 4 bed dorms, private rooms with a double bed and set of bunks that also sleep up to 4 people plus there are 9 awesome powered campervan sites set amongst pristine native bush.

Free pick-ups and drop-offs from Raglan township are available for anyone coming to check-in and check-out. Guests can enjoy the usual and not so usual facilities of our Karioi Lodge.  

Dorms: 15 dorm rooms, 4 beds per room
Private/Double/Twin/Family Rooms: 5 private rooms which sleep up to 4 people with one double bed and one set of bunks.

Heaters, fresh clean linen, pillows and blankets are supplied in all of the rooms. Some dorm rooms have sea views, most have beautiful bush and mountain views. All rooms are in close proximity to shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. Most rooms have hammocks and sunny decks outside for relaxing on.

Karioi campervan sites: Enjoy the privacy and unique setting of our campervan sites. Park up on ‘Manuka Terrace’ at one of 9 powered sites, relax in beautiful native bush surrounds, listen to birdsong, and the sound of the ocean. Campervan bliss! Nearby kitchen and bathroom facilities are available for campers convenience.

Kitchens: There are two fully equipped kitchens with microwaves, ovens, large fridges, pots, pans and other cooking, eating and cleaning utensils. Enjoy cooking in our large kitchen next to the main lounge or in the smaller kitchen downstairs, which opens up to an outdoor patio area. A BBQ and gas bottle is supplied for guest use. Campervan guests are welcome to use the backpacker kitchens but also have a separate equipped kitchen in the campsite.

Bathrooms: Hot water showers and toilets are in close proximity to all rooms. There are two bathroom blocks including 3 showers in each (male and female blocks) and two private bathroom units with shower and toilet available for all guests.

Sauna: A Scandinavian style sauna is on every evening and free for guests to use. Steam up till you’re cooked, then pop to the outdoor shower for a quick cool off before hopping back in. Repeat until done. Definitely a must for those who have been busy tramping the mountain, surfing or exploring the rocky Whale Bay coastline.

Bush technics: We may be located in a bush paradise 8kms from town but we’re not completely isolated! We are keeping you connected with computer access and Wi-Fi facilities, satellite TV with all the channels including sports and movies on a 42 inch plasma TV, DVD/video player with collection of DVDs and VHS and a plugged in hard-drive full of movies to watch on choll out days.

Adventure and sports: The infamous bush Loop Track provides direct access to the Mt. Karioi tramp. Rustic barn with table tennis, pool table, dart board and mountain bikes will keep you busy during your stay. Not to mention the amazing surf at your doorstep, daily surf lessons running everyday in winter and twice daily in summer and discounted half-day surfboard and wetsuit hire for guests.

Look out! Spectacular sunsets, sunrises plus checking out the local wildlife are easily done at Karioi Lodge. The Inspiration Point lookout with big round deck and seating for hanging out gives you 360 degree views of the mountain and Tasman Ocean. Check the surf, practice yoga, enjoy the sun or a few drinks – you’ll be close to heaven! Glow worms are visible every night and during the day check out the native wood pigeons and tuis! Over the years travellers have added to the artwork which you will find dotted around the lodge. Check out the Whale of Whale Bay, Erin’s bush nymph and other awesome creations!

Sustainable garden programme and fresh organic produce: The Karioi Lodge has developed perma-culture gardens producing free-range eggs and organic vegetables and fruit. Guests who are keen to learn or work are often able to join in while helping to pay for their accommodation with us.

The best of both worlds with daily town and beach transport.: You can experience the amazing scenery, adventure activities and beach culture of whale bay by staying at the Karioi Lodge and also enjoy shopping, cafes, markets and the other delights of Raglan township by taking advantage of our daily town run. We also offer daily transport to sandy Ngarunui Beach (halfway between town and Whale Bay). Our office staff will help you to plan your day no problem!
