The Karioi Lodge is also home of the Raglan Surfing School, which means we can offer fantastic value for money on surf packages for guests who wish to learn to surf & have a great place to stay! Surf packages give the budding surfer a good opportunity for practicing the skills learnt in the initial beginner lesson with all surf equipment, accommodation & beach transport provided during their stay. Our packages are very popular and at any time of the year you'll be able to meet & probably end up surfing with others who are doing the same as you... surfing up a storm!

HALF DAY BEGINNER SURF LESSONS...These lessons are suitable for beginners and novice surfers and run daily in the winter and twice daily in the summer. The lesson takes place on the day of your arrival (e.g. day one of your package) so in the summer you can choose between a morning & an afternoon lesson (if you choose the morning lesson, feel free to check in early if arranged with the office) and in the winter the lesson for the day usually starts at 2pm. Regardless you should try to arrive around 1 hour prior to the lesson start time to give you time to settle into your accommodation & unpack before being ready to go on your lesson 15 minutes prior to the start time.

Lessons are held in a group situation where the instructor to student ratio is 1:5. The lesson begins with some dry-land training in our sports barn at the Karioi Lodge. Afterwards its time to charge it for the water session held at Ngarunui Beach about 5 minutes drive away from the lodge. This beach is beautiful, long and sandy so you don't have to worry about rocks or crowds of people in the water. SURF EQUIPMENT HIRE...the day(s) following your surf lesson will be spent with a half day surfing session at the beach. We will supply you with all your surf equipment and you can then practice everything you learnt in the surf lesson. The hire day(s) are unsupervised but you will have learnt enough in the lesson to feel confident in the water. Also there are bound to be other people surfing with you from the Karioi Lodge who are also on surf packages. You can choose from a morning or afternoon session.

SHARE ACCOMMODATION... All packages include accommodation in our share rooms where you'll sleep in a 4 bunk bed room. All bed linen is included. Upgrading to a private room at the lodge or a luxury holiday home in Whale Bay within walking distance of the lodge is available.

ALL EQUIPMENT... We provide all your surf equipment such as specially designed learner boards, fibreglass boards & cozy wetsuits on a surf package.

ALL TRANSPORT... The beach which is great for learner surfers is about 5 minutes drive from the Karioi Lodge. We provide all transport to and from the beach as part of the surf package, and we'll take you at the best time of the day for surfing where possible.

UPGRADING SURFING LESSONS... The regular package prices include one half day beginner surf lesson with subsequent day(s) surf board & wetsuit hire. Upgrades to include either more than one surf lesson or a private lesson in your package are available.

Some prefer to swap their beginner group surfing lesson for a private 1on1 lesson. While one beginner lesson is usually enough to get you started with surfing with enough skills to spend the next few days practicing without supervision others prefer to have more than one surfing lesson for the duration of the package.

Surf board & wetsuit hires are for a half day period. For the super keen upgrading to a full day costs $10 for guests.
